Newsletter

This was our view out our window this morning. Pretty, huh?? We did have a busy day. I'm sore and tired tonight..

 

Here's what I've been doing for the last few days, working on the newsletter we put out every three months. And the way time flies, it seems like I was just working on the previous one!! smile... We have quite a time getting the people who lived in the area (that this newsletter is about) to put their memories down on paper!! So, I wrote this little blurb, hoping it will spurs their memories and that they'll realize they don't have to write a big article!!

Here we are, putting out the fall issue already! Time does not stand still for anyone does it?? What are your thoughts when you think about September (school starts for another year?), October (Halloween?) and November, (Thanksgiving?) Think of all the memories these months bring to mind.

September, do you remember your first day back to school after a long lazy summer of fun?? (Now for me I was excited, back then as I would get a few new clothes and a new pair of shoes (ordered through the Alden or Sears catalog, they had a form of a foot that you would stand on, for a proper measurement.)  In today’s world, I guess some of the parents say the kids get new clothes all year long, so not too many new ones for school, they buy mainly school supplies which can cost and arm and a leg. To me it is mind boggling what they have to spend on supplies.

October, cool days and nights, leaves falling, the sounds of them crunching underneath your feet as you walk, hearing the cicadas. The smell of food in the oven, baking, roasting or whatever your favorite recipe may be! And then there is Halloween. I have added a story John Hantla told about how his father subdued some of the children’s pranks!

November, of course the first thing that pops into my mind, is Thanksgiving. Oh, the family gatherings, with food enough to feed and army. How hard the women worked to make an amazing meal for her family. Sometimes to be hindered by an early snow storm. I think it was the same year; my turkey was ready to hit the oven, only to discover it didn’t work. (However, we had an old Convection oven in the basement, which saved the day or should I say the turkey!) And then the year, when I had everything done, only to realize the snow had turned into a major storm, keeping my parents and family away.

So, what are some of your memories?? I know we all have them, and if only we could take the time to share them! As you can see mine are short, but I hope will stir a few thoughts and memories for you.

How Hot Is It??

Yesterday and today were very hot! Yep, that's how summer begins in Iowa!! Look at this poor robin..I think he was panting.

I'm always amazed at the fact that things (weeds and or grass) grow from the cracks in the cement. Unbelievable! How does that happen?? I've yet to figure it out!

Yesterday we went out for a bite to eat at one of the drive thru's...one we hadn't been to in years!! (It wasn't as good as we remembered it), but we had been saying every time we drove by, we've got to stop and get a bite there sometime! So we parked under a shade tree (see the shadow of the tree on the pavement?) It was nice to get out of the heat.

Actually there was a DQ next door, and next time that's where we'll eat...lol

Tom spotted this older man riding his bike around across the street up and down by the car wash. Then he sander ed across the busy street and pulled under the shade tree, opposite us. Tom said, 'oh, he's going to have a cigarette!' And sure enough, he sat on his bike and smoked his cigarette. I tried so hard to get a picture of him either taking a drag or blowing the smoke out. But I didn't do very good. I thought it was funny, when that little girl drove by on her pretty pink bike. Both ends of the spectrum...young and old alike love to ride their bikes on a summer day. Do any of you still ride a bike?? Another day, I will share a 'true' story about Tom deciding to ride a bike again...until then......shot time...good night!

Rain and Sunshine

We woke up to rain and more rain this morning. One nice thing about all of it...the bird bath stays full.

And of course if you know robins....they love to take a bath wherever there is water!!



Funny, when they shake it off and fly away!!

By the way, I found out thanks to Theresa the picture of that robin I put up last night was a juvenile one. And to think I thought it was an old one...lol (See what I know?? Or should I say 'don't know'...) But I'm learning!!

 

By this afternoon the sun was out and our temperatures rose to a high of 77 degrees! I didn't go out, but I bet it was humid!!

Yesterday, I stepped out back to check the volunteer pansies!! I feared that the yard man might has weed wacked them...lol But thank goodness they are still very happy and growing quite well! You'll notice a few weeds in there that I/we pulled after I took the picture! Our sedum is doing so well this year also. I really think all the rain has made all the difference in the world. Some areas have had way too much moisture. And my prayers are with them. How about where you live? What has your spring been like??
