A Fine Romance and More...

Look what I got a week or so ago, yes, this is Susan Branch's new book A Fine Romance! Falling in love with the English countryside! We (her blog "girlfriends") virtually followed her and Joe as they toured England! It was so exciting to see and hear about their siting's! After they returned home she took her notes (diary of sorts) and sketch's and started working on this wonderful book....day after day..week after week, then soon month after month she worked putting this book together. We kept checking in on her---she would write to us showing bits and pieces on her book. And now...look at it...isn't it just the prettiest thing you've ever seen?? smile..  Soon her and Joe will be heading across the country (from Martha's Vineyard to  Los Angeles..) to do several book signings. We have been encouraged to contact our local independent book stores, tell them about Susan's new book A Fine Romance and ask them to invite Susan for a book signing. Well...you know what I did immediately, I contacted our local book store The Book People! They were very excited about it and hopefully their invitation will be accepted... smile.. I told her about Susan's grandfather Willard, who of course was from right here in Sioux City!! Oh, can you imagine the buzz in our city if Sue and Joe would come here??? Oh...my it's been so hard to contain myself, as I've wanted to share this news on my blog...but as most of you know my laptop died and I was waiting for a new one. Guess what!!! It's here and I am so happy!! I love it!!!

 

Tuesday, our boy went to have his play date at the groomer! I just know he had an amazing day! He was pooped when he got home!

Yesterday our friend Sherry, came up to visit and to clean our house. Well, what a surprise...she walked in the house carrying a  Jello cake!!! Her and her granddaughter whipped it up the night before. Actually they made three, one for her daughter and one for herself (and her husband). It is soooo good...fresh and delicious! I love them because of the lightness and coolness as it comes from the fridge.

Today I finally got to go out for a ride in that clean vehicle...doesn't that dash board shine like a new dime?? I told Tom, I had to be careful as the seat was kind of slick...I might just slide out...lol 

 

My friend Diana stopped by this afternoon and fixed my hair (she is so sweet!) This is funny....she is not really a dog person...but I think Rusty has finally won her over. He laid at her feet as she was sitting on the couch visiting with us...she said "do you want to go home with me?" He just laid there...like "I wuv you!"...smile... We thought we had lost our baby...ha...ha But she left him here when she went home...(thank goodness!)

We shall never forget...

Today, September 11th, brings back such terrible memories. It is burned into my mind, just like the day John F. Kennedy was killed. It's days like this that puts me back in time. Eleven years ago today, I was at work, walking toward the ice maker, filling my water jug with ice, preparing myself for another work day. (I always had a jug of ice water on my desk to drink all day..) The TV was on a National News Station, and I paused to watch as the first plane crashed into the first Twin Towers. I remember remarking...it must be really foggy there for an airliner to crash into that building. I then went back to my office, lifting up a prayer for those who would have been killed in the crash. Soon, word was out that another plane crashed into the other tower...the rest of the day is a blur. Working at the airport, brought more fear for us...wondering if this was just the beginning of an attack on our country. Before the day was over, all flights were cancelled, the airport was closed...the gates were double locked....and fear struck all of us! Word had it..that the President was being flown into Offutt Air force Base in Omaha to keep him safe...which is just south of us. But we found out later that wasn't true. But at the time, our fears were enhanced....

Once again, my thoughts and prayers went out today to all those families and people affected by this terrible act of terrorism. 

We went to the doctor today for our monthly check up, and of course I spotted this beautiful 'yellow' flower and thought of my daughter. smile... I had asked her if she liked my new header and her remark was, "yes, it is so you...smile"... I said "oh you mean because it's mostly yellow??" ha...ha...

We had a good report at the doctors office, so that was good! Afterwards, we headed to the Senior Center for our lunch..they were serving broasted chicken again...yumm..as always it was amazing! You just can't cook for what it cost and what they serve! I had a nice lettuce salad along with the chicken dinner.. smile..

They also had a book sale going on, they must have been cleaning out the library..smile... I picked up a couple books for my son, not sure if he'll like them or not but for fifty cents, I couldn't go wrong..smile.. Speaking of books, I finished the book "Rose of Sharon", that my friend Rose Ross Zediker wrote, it was the third of a series of books she wrote. I told her how amazing to be able to run a thread through all three of them, and yet they are a great read on their own. God has given her such a gift!  I will be starting on my last Gladys Tabor book "Country Chronicle", so I'll have to ask Susan Branch what book of Gladys's I should get next...smile... She is an authority on Gladys Tabor books...smile... How about you? What book or books are you reading?

We had another record setting day today...with a high of 98 degrees! BUT tomorrow our temps are to cool off and be with highs in the 70's! Yeah!! My kind of weather for the next week...all 70's and the highest will be in the low 80's...  How about your weather, is it going to be nice also???

Back from the Missing...

Hello...hello...hello! What a busy week this has been and I'm sorry I have been so lack on getting a post up! (sorry...) To start with, I have been trying to get that newsletter out...and what a challenge that has been. BUT finally last night about 8 o'clock I got it sent it off to Kinko's to be printed! Yeah!!! 

Now, about these beautiful flowers..........Tom got them for me today....isn't he just the sweetest?? This was another (glad) teary moment...he is just so thoughtful and full of surprises... (Love...) 

Monday, Tom was busy washing the deck and preparing it for the sealer he was to put on it... It always looks so nice when it's finished, but it is a lot of work. smile... He did get it washed off and three fourth sealed, before running out of sealant...sad... We have to get some more next week!! Sunday night I took my MS shot, so Monday was a day where I didn't have much energy to do anything...

One day we had to go down town and run some errands!  We picked up some pictures from the Museum, that they had printed for us...for our South Bottoms Reunion. Every year, we try to get more pictures to share with the people who come to the reunion. I counted them and we now have 8 three ring binders full of pictures!! (When we were downtown..I spotted this statue of butterflies...isn't it cute?)

After we ran our errands we stopped at the Senior Center for dinner...they had broasted chicken and all the fixings, who would believe all that for less than $5.00! We're almost tempted to go up there everyday..smile... But then there is always too much to do at home...smile...

We went by and spotted this Carnival downtown. Do you remember the days of carnivals? They were fun weren't they? But....were is the key word for us...smile....  But isn't this Ferris wheel pretty??? 

Yesterday, we went and got Tom's hearing aides adjusted, while he was doing that I went next door and visited with my brother and sister in law. I took my laptop to show them some pictures. When I got home and re-pluged it in...I didn't have an internet connection..sad... So, that ruined my night.. However, today I was able to get it back up and running!! smile... We headed out to Red Hats this afternoon. It was the perfect day for that!! (Well, I guess any day is a good day for Red Hats!..smile...)  

And here I am ready to head out! Our luncheon was wonderful. The ladies of the church made all kinds of salads. They were amazing....and they even sold the left over salads...and of course I had to buy a couple! smile...

July 24, 1937: Hallie went to the city. I got dinner for Bill and Walten. Walten brought me home at 5:00. Paul went to circus with Hazel. Ernest, Ruth, Melvin and I went. Saw "Bud", Theo and girls. It rained! I went home with Melvin.

Look what came in the mail today!!

Oh I just had to start the blog with this precious picture of Lorelai...She is so cute!! I hope we get to see her this weekend!!

I am so excited...this morning Tom came in with the mail...(he had to make two trips...smile) First I received Country Chronicles by Gladys Tabor from a book dealer here in Iowa! Yeah!! This was a library book and in really good shape!! I can't wait to read it!

The second package was a first edition of The Stillmeadow Road by Gladys Tabor, I ordered this one from a dealer in Cape Cod. This is the second book I have ordered from him.. I love them as they have a nice plastic cover, which really saves the original jacket!

The fun thing is he wraps the book in his local newspaper, The Cape Cod Times...smile... so we also enjoy reading it and see what life is like on 'ole Cape Cod'...smile... and look...he even worked the crossword puzzle!!

Now not to be outdone, Tom got two books also. He saw this on the news and thought it would be really interesting to read. (I believe it's stories from several people who live in one town that survived WW II.) The other book is called "The Good Old Days"..I didn't get a picture of it..but I know we'll really love that one!

March 21, 1937:  Mrs. Johnston went to church with us. Madeline liked my hair in the middle. Gunnerson's came this afternoon also granddad, and Davis and wife, also Cecil, Elaine and Melvin went by and went to Earnest for supper. Came back. Cecil lay on the cat. He was so peeved. Went for a ride.
